Heartstart Malvern is run entirely by volunteers. We are keen to hear from anyone who would like to volunteer with us. The more volunteers we have, the more sustainable and successful Heartstart Malvern will become.

Reports to: Training Co-ordinator


Time Commitment: Depending on the demand for our courses, trainers usually cover an average of 2 x 2 hour sessions per month.


Role of the Trainer


The overall role of the trainer is to help is to help people attending a training session develop the practical skills and confidence to attempt resuscitation on a patient on a patient in cardiac arrest. As resuscitation is a practical skill, trainers will be spend a majority of the session observing, encouraging, and when appropriate, correcting people, practicing their resuscitation skills, rather than talking about resuscitation.


Trainers will usually be responsible for helping a group of no more than six people at a training session.


Main responsibilities of the Trainer


The main responsibilities of a trainer are outlined below:


1. Helping people attending a training session to develop confidence and competence in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator

  • Demonstrating CPR and how to use an AED
  • Watching course participants practice and develop their skills
  • Correcting course participants technique in a supportive and encouraging way
  • Answering questions from participants

2. Helping training sessions to run smoothly

  • Letting the training co-ordinator know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a training session you are booked onto
  • Where possible help with the collection and returning of any training equipment
  • Help to set up the training room
  • Ensure that manikins faces are cleaned between participants

3. Other requirements

  • Ensuring course registration forms are completed
  • Signposting participants to the schemes website for further training resources (e.g. handouts and Utube clips)
  • Encouraging participants to support the scheme (e.g. by recommending friends to attend training or by considering fundraising)
  • Providing relevant feedback to the Steering Group about the scheme

Please note that it is not necessary for trainers to have a training qualification or previous clinical experience. We will develop people who have the interest and enthusiasm to become a trainer.

Role of Fundraisers


Fundraisers will be responsible for helping to raise money for Heartstart Malvern. The money raised will be used to help ensure that we can continue to provide free Heartstart Malvern training sessions. Funds raised will also be used to purchase defibrillators which will be placed in strategic locations around Malvern for members of the public to use.


Main responsibilities of Fundraisers


1. Organise and arrange fundraising activities

  • Working with other volunteer fundraisers, plan and deliver local activities and events to raise funds
  • Support local collections

2. Develop new fundraising opportunities

  • Identifying new fundraising opportunities or activities to raise funds
  • Identifying and working with other organisations we can work with to raise funds (e.g. social groups, pubs etc)

3. Keeping up to date

  • Maintaining an awareness of Heartstart Malvern and our activities
  • Attending occasional meetings
