Meet our Trustees
Dedication. Expertise. Action.
Heartstart Malvern is guided by a dedicated team of trustees who share a passion for saving lives and making our community safer. They bring a range of skills, knowledge and experience to the charity, helping to shape our strategy, support our volunteers and ensure we can continue to provide free life-saving training and maintain our network of public access defibrillators. Working together, they help Heartstart Malvern make a lasting difference across Malvern and the surrounding villages.

Richard Vakis-Lowe
Chairman, Heartstart Malvern
Richard helped establish the original Heartstart Malvern in 1988 and the current Heartstart Malvern in 2016. Most of his career has been within the NHS as a paramedic and managing general practices. He has also worked for the British Heart Foundation, setting up Heartstart schemes across Central England and Wales. Richard currently works part-time for a national dementia charity and is supporting another project funded by Malvern Hills District Councils setting up five community Heartstart schemes across their area. He spends what little spare time he has left gardening and walking his two energetic spaniels.

Dr. Kate Conway is a retired Herefordshire GP, having specialised in Palliative Care, Diabetes and Emergency Medicine. Kate is married with three grown-up children and is a proud grandmother to four grandchildren. She enjoys keeping active through dog walking, Pilates and pickleball, as well as spending quality time with her family.

Cathy Millar
Trustee
I'm really proud to be a Trustee of Heartstart Malvern. I have acted as Secretary since our launch and have been totally impressed by the dedication of our volunteers who give so much of their time. I very much enjoy taking part in our training sessions and working with my fellow Trustees to enrich the work that we do. We have made great headway in our training programmes and in siting much needed public defibrillators across Malvern and the surrounding villages. In my spare time I love swimming, reading and the theatre. We are so lucky in Malvern to have a really great Arts scene and I'm glad I moved to the town to enjoy all it has to offer.

David Grier
Trustee & Trainer
My name is David and I grew up and went to school in Malvern and Hanley Castle. I retired back to the area after nearly 40 years working for the NHS in the South West. I enjoy cycling, hill walking, playing the piano and attempting to learn French and Italian. I joined HeartStart Malvern as a volunteer trainer a couple of years after retiring and more recently have become a trustee of the charity. I think Heartstart’s aim of installing locally accessible defibrillators and its practical and free training of CPR and defibrillator skills are well worthwhile and will benefit the local community.
